When you're a fan of a certain genre of music, you pick up the differences between different songs and artists of that genre. It doesn't take a genius to realize that.

I wouldn't call them pioneers of the genre, or even close to it for that matter, but they've been doing it for a lot longer than the majority of these 'pop' bands. If anything, bands sound like Taking Back Sunday and not the other way around. Each of their albums have a unique sound when compared to another. Of course they're going to sound similar, but it's the same band. Fuck it, I'm voting for Bush.
